Home Ownership for Mothers in Erie
To truly combat housing instability and help women build knowledge and wealth for their children, Erie City Moms bolsters Mother Figures who aspire to homeownership. At H.O.M.E., qualifying Mothers can gain the confidence and skills they need and connect to social capital that helps them achieve their dreams.
History of H.O.M.E.
In fall 2023, Erie City Moms purchased and began renovating 226 East 10th Street. The 2,600-square-foot property was built in 1899 and considered blighted by the City of Erie Government. Our incredible team of Moms, volunteers, contractors, advisors, and donors has been working to renovate the property into two apartments—what we hope will be our first of our homeowner pipeline apartments. Called H.O.M.E.: Home Ownership for Mothers in Erie, qualifying Moms and their families will live in the apartments for up to 24 months and then move into the home of their choice anywhere in Erie County. The 3- and 4-bedroom units will be used as launchpads for qualifying Moms who are ready for homeownership but want:
Financial literacy education and accountability saving for a down payment
Mentoring on the systems and maintenance of a home
Hands-on support during their home-buying process
Qualified Mother Figures and their families can live for up to 24 months as they continue to build their credit and savings accounts while being mentored through financial literacy for homeownership and trained in home maintenance. Tenants will receive help in their permanent housing search and accessing all first-time homebuyer grants. After completing the program, Moms can buy anywhere in Erie County that suits their family best. If they successfully complete the mentoring program, they will receive 50% of their rent back at closing to put toward the cost of their home.
The H.O.M.E.: Home Ownership for Mothers in Erie program creates true housing security, increases independence, builds generational capital, and buttresses Erie’s schools and neighborhoods while directly contributing to attracting and retaining young professionals and families in Erie County and community development. The program emphasizes the importance of financial literacy, personal development, and leadership skills, which are crucial for the economic and social vitality of Erie. By empowering young Mothers, particularly those from underrepresented groups, ECMoms fosters a diverse and inclusive community. The sense of belonging and support created by ECMoms can lead to a more vibrant and dynamic Erie, making it an appealing place to live, work, and raise families.
